ONE of the most iconic features at Muncaster Castle is the Meadowvole Maze.

But the decision has been taken to part with the childhood classic and replace it with a new exciting attraction.

After 23 years of entertaining crowds, the decision was made by the team at Muncaster to part with the maze. Owner Ewan Frost-Pennington said the decision was made "with great difficulty."

He continued: "We are all very attached to the maze! It has been there since I was an 8-year-old and as with me the maze is an important part of our history and identity!

"But it has been 23 years and all good things must come to an end. We are excited about what will come next."

The maze mascot, Max, will still be present at Muncaster and will continue to make regular appearances but will no longer be in the maze.

Muncaster Castle held events across January 13 and 14 in order to bid farewell to the maze, activities that took place included maze time trials. Ewan said: "It was awesome, a true celebration of the maze!

"We loved seeing so many people come and have fun in the maze. Over 400 people came to visit Max and the maze! It’s entertained hundreds of thousands of children over the years!

"The Meadowvole Maze has clearly had a big impact on people which we at Muncaster are proud of, while we are sad the maze is now over we are excited about the future."

The Muncaster team have been busy brainstorming plans for the future of the Maze, and have finalised a decision with work starting this week. Ewan said: "We are keeping that secret for the time being, let’s give the maze the limelight."

"We are excited about the future, and will release more details soon."

One staple for many people is to visit Muncaster during events such as Halloween which incorporate the maze.

However, Muncaster claim they have ensured that "the vibe of the scary maze will definitely feature this coming Halloween"...
