A production of a captivating comedy-drama play will be coming to Carlisle.
Closer, written by Patrick Marber, is described as a bittersweet square dance of the private lives of four people across two years.
While first performed over 25 years ago, Closer still hits as a modern piece of writing and has since become an object of desire in its own right for theatre students in the UK and beyond.
Premiering in 1997, the play explores the intricate dynamics of love, relationships, betrayal, and the elusive nature of human connection.
Set in London, the narrative unfolds through a series of intense and intimate encounters between four central characters – Dan, Alice, Larry, and Anna.
The storyline is a complex web of shifting alliances and passionate entanglements.
The characters' lives intersect and collide as they navigate the complexities of modern relationships.
Dan, a writer, falls in love with Alice, a stripper and photographer.
However, their connection becomes increasingly complicated when Larry, a dermatologist, enters the picture, leading to a series of romantic entanglements and betrayals.
The introduction of Anna, a successful photographer, and the person of desire for both Dan and Larry, further intensifies the emotional turmoil.
Marber's razor-sharp dialogue and keen insight into human behaviour create a gripping exploration of love's fragility and the consequences of desire.
