A man who is attempting to walk all of the UK’s coast for a mental health charity is nearing the end of his Cumbrian journey.

Tim Jones, from Stoke-on-Trent, started the challenge over seven weeks ago in central Wales and was in Cumbria before last week.

By January 7 he was in Barrow-in-Furness, having the previous week begun his journey in Cumbria, heading steadily north, having walked the coast of the Isle of Man prior.

He is completing the mammoth walk of roughly 11,000 miles for the mental health charity Mind which he said was close to his heart.

“I’ve struggled from a young age with my own mental health, and especially in Christmas and the New Year, and walking is good for the soul,” he said.

He is doing this full time with his dog Monty, funded by his own money as well as donations he receives from the Buy Me a Coffee service through which people can donate small amounts of money, equivalent to buying someone a coffee.

He uses money for various things, but mainly to fortify himself and keep the journey progressing.

Yesterday (January 12) he was in Stanwix Holiday Park in Silloth having a well-earned rest day.

He said that day: “I’m feeling great today, I'm just catching up with everything, done my washing, and sat on the sofa.

“The journey was great, I've done St Bees, stayed in the Seacote and they gifted me a night there, and then Workington the night before last, I was at Hall Park Hotel which I had to pay for.

“Here, everything has been given to me for free.

“I had free fish and chips last night from the village and I've just been gifted a breakfast from the Fairy Dust Emporium.

“Carlisle is the stop after the next one, I'm heading to Anthorn, then I can carry on to Bowness-on-Solway, and the stop after that will be Carlisle.”

He said he was hoping to avoid having to sleep rough in Anthorn because of the weather, which affects his dog Monty as well, and is waiting to hear back from locals who may have a room or a caravan for him.

Mr Jones has given himself a rough estimate of four to five years in terms of how long he will have spent doing the whole walk, and it will take a very long time to do all the Scottish islands when incorporating the ferries required.

He’s mainly relying on donations to fortify his journey.
