A DRINK-DRIVER decided to get behind the wheel after coming home from a work’s party.

Police saw Ashley McCourt, 27, driving a white BMW on Ellenborough Place in Maryport in the early hours of December 9.

Pamela Fee, prosecuting at Workington Magistrates’ Court, said the vehicle was being driven over the speed limit. It was followed and located on the promenade.

McCourt was breathalysed and gave a reading of 68mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit to drive is 35mcg.

He was arrested and gave a reading of 64mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath at the police station.

McCourt, of Whitecroft Court, Maryport, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle with alcohol level above the limit.

Mike Woolaghan, defending, said: “It’s always a shame when a person of previous good character appears before the court for something that is avoidable.

“He had been out for a work’s do, had gone home and consumed alcohol.

“The decision to get into the car was not the appropriate one to make.”

McCourt was banned from driving for 18 months, to be reduced by 18 weeks, if he completes the drink-drivers’ rehabilitation course.

He was fined £672 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £269 victim surcharge.
