Wesley van Schelven, 9, from Lorton School, has now been for a run every day for a whole year in support of the Woodland Trust.

Regardless of the weather, Wesley has headed out for a run everyday since January 10, 2023.

His amazing determination and motivation has seen him run over 560km and climb over 10,000m.

“I enjoy being out in the peace and in nature. I enjoy watching it," said Wesley.

"Some days it has been hard in the bad weather but most days I have loved it. And I always feel better for getting out and doing it."

He has enjoyed spotting wildlife on his way too, such as deer, buzzards and a peregrine falcon.

His passion for the natural world, and the importance of preserving it, has led him to decide to turn his year of running into a fundraising opportunity.

He has chosen to run each day for the Woodland Trust and has already raised more than £550 on his JustGiving page.

Wesley is a member of Cumberland Fell Runners Juniors (CFR), attending training and over the summer competing in a series of fell races.

“It is such a friendly fun club to run with. Tony (Jewel) has been great and helped me get into racing," said Wesley.

This season he won the CFR's 'best newcomer' prize and come second in the Under 12’s summer league.

He runs an average of 1.5 kilometres a day but at a weekend he has run up to 14 kilometres in the fells, and while on holiday he has used this challenge as a great opportunity to explore new places from the streets of London, to the Scottish wilds and Swedish forests and beaches.

“You never know what you’re going to see when you are running," said Wesley.

"You see the world from a different place and you always feel better for it and ready for the day”.

Wesley completed his challenge on January 10 with an 2km run in frozen rain on icy forest tracks, however, he enjoys his runs so much he is going to continue his daily run for the foreseeable future.

Donations can be made on Wesley's fundraising page.
