IN this edition of nostalgia, we are looking back at memories from our towns and villages in north Cumbria. Today, we focus on the 1970's.
Like many areas of the U.K., North Cumbria was undergoing a shift from traditional industries such as steel production and coal mining towards a more diverse economy including manufacturing, retail and tourism.
New housing estates were constructed in many areas of North Cumbria. Roads and rail services were improved, including the development of the M6 motorway which runs east of almost all of Cumbria and provides a major transport route to Scotland.
The popularity of the Lake District as a tourist destination continued to grow during the 1970s.
In the pictures we can see multiple events such as the Longtown dog show, sport competitions and leek shows!
