A pair of martial artists are set to launch an exclusive women's self-defence class in Carlisle city centre.

In a bid to foster empowerment and self-confidence, Lauren Reay and Seonghae Wilson, who have trained and competed all over the world in Mixed Martial Artists (MMA) and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) respectively, are hosting three classes this January.

The classes at Bodytek Fitness in Carlisle aim to equip women with practical self-defence skills while promoting fitness and mental resilience.

MMA fighter, Lauren Reay brings a wealth of experience from the cage to the class. Her approach combines elements of various martial arts disciplines, ensuring a well-rounded and adaptable skill set.

Seonghae (SH) Wilson, the first female BJJ brown belt in Cumbria, adds a unique dimension to the self-defence program.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is recognised for its emphasis on leverage and technique, providing an effective means for individuals to defend themselves against larger opponents, especially when on the ground.

The classes are structured to cater to all skill levels. Participants can expect to learn situational awareness, effective strikes, and fundamental grappling techniques that are practical for real-world scenarios.

Both instructors are committed to creating a supportive and empowering environment. They believe that self-defence is not just about physical techniques but also about building mental resilience and confidence.

The classes will emphasise the importance of maintaining composure under pressure, making informed decisions, and utilising one's surroundings to stay safe.

Speaking to the News & Star, Lauren expressed the duo's passion for empowering women through martial arts.

She said: "Our goal is to provide practical tools and knowledge that will enable women to protect themselves and feel confident in their ability to do so. Self-defence is not just about physical strength, it's about understanding your capabilities and using them strategically."

The women's self-defence class starts on January, 13 and will also run on January 18 and 27, from 9am to 2pm.

Interested participants can register early on Instagram @carlisleselfdefence, as limited slots are available.

Together, Lauren and SH are poised to inspire and equip women with the skills they need to navigate the world confidently.
