A North Cumbrian author has published a new book on ‘the power of ancient wellness’.

Gill Thackray, who is based in Torpenhaw, has lived and worked with indigenous communities around the world, including Tibet, China, Thailand and India, studying the science of healing and ancient wisdom traditions.

She is a trained shamanic practitioner and teaches qigong and yoga and is also a coach and performance psychologist working with FTSE 100 companies, sporting bodies, healthcare professionals, universities and NGOs to create ‘individual and organisational’ transformation.

The book, entitled ‘The Power of Ancient Wellness’ is described as a “beginner’s guide to the oldest healing techniques in existence and how to use to them in your daily life.”

The three sections - mind, body and spirit - guides the reader on different pathways to create their own’ customised holistic toolkit based’ on the ‘oldest healing techniques in existence’.

The book explores age-old breathwork techniques; restoring balance in your body through Garashana (skin brushing), Gua Sha (facial massage) and the life-changing principles of Ayurveda; and re-energise your soul with Reiki or a Cacao ceremony.

The Power of Ancient Wellness combines ‘accessible’ introductions to each practice, with practical exercises to try out and recipes for tinctures and beauty treatments.

The book is aimed to help people through January after the excesses of the festive period.

Many people undertake wellbeing routines during January, including dry January and ‘veganuary’, but many people struggle with their mental health during the month as the dark nights and financial pressures take their toll.

“There is a huge amount of research that being outdoors generates positive feelings, reduces stress and anxiety,” said Gill.

“There’s a mindful practice called decoupling in the book that reduces anxiety.

Decoupling allows us to slow down and come back into a state of calm. Something as simple as placing your hand over your heart area and focusing on your breath will activate your parasympathetic nervous system and reduce stress.”
