A vets in Cumbria had an interesting visitor during the New Year's weekend as they nursed a seal pup back to health.

Millcroft Veterinary Group, located in Cockermouth, welcomed the seal last weekend after it was brought in by a local wildlife rescue.

It had been monitored on the beach near Mawbray, but was starting to head towards the road and there were concerns for its safety.

Once at Millcroft, they were able to give it a health check and weigh it. Vicki, one of the vets is also a marine mammal medic so spoke to British Divers Marine Life Rescue for advice.

Its weight was ok for its size, it had no signs of disease and no major injuries so was thought that it was probably tired after the recent stormy weather.

Vicki and Rachel, one of the nurses, gave it a feed of electrolytes and glucose by a stomach tube and left it to sleep undisturbed.

By the morning it was much brighter so after another feed, British Divers Marine Life rescue arranged for volunteer medic Andrew Stanley to collect and release it.

Andrew filmed the seal heading into the sea, and his video can be seen below.
