Cumbrian swimming star Luke Greenbank will race for Great Britain at the World Aquatics Championships in February.

The Cockermouth favourite has been named in a 20-strong British Swimming team for the event in Doha.

Greenbank’s inclusion follows some strong recent performances from the Olympic backstroke medallist.

The 26-year-old will be aiming for another positive showing as Team GB starts the build-up to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

British Swimming say the main focus of the championships in Doha is securing relay team quota places at Paris 2024.

Greenbank is in good form having recently broken his own British men’s backstroke 200m record.

He did so when winning a silver medal at the European Short Course Championships in Romania.

British Swimming performance director Chris Spice said: “We are all aware of the unusual challenge that a World Championships in Olympic year could pose – but our swimmers and staff are preparing for Doha as a crucial part of our build-up to Paris and, before that, the British Swimming Championships in April.

"Locking in relay places across the Olympic programme is a key focus, with our relay teams having been so successful in recent years, showing the versatility and depth of this cohort of athletes.

“On top of that, though, this is a great racing opportunity on the world stage and will be a serious test of our swimmers’ preparations and work over the winter months as they will still be in heavy training throughout the meet.”

The 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar, runs from February 11 to 18.
