A primary school in Cumbria has been rated 'Good' after a recent Ofsted inspection.

Wiggonby C of E primary school received the grade after an inspection in November. The school's last inspection was in 2018, when they were also rated good.

Pupils at the school are described as happy, polite and well mannered, and are deemed excellent ambassadors for the school. Pupils also enjoy respectful relationships with each other and staff.

The school is also commended for its commitment to children's mental health and well-being.

The report reads: "Pupils, including children in the early years, respond well to the high expectations that the school has of their achievement. Most pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), achieve well.

"The school’s eco council provides pupils with opportunities to improve their local environment. They learn to plant trees and to grow flowers and vegetables. Pupils are proud of their recent success in a community gardening competition.

"Pupils become more confident and resilient through the extra responsibilities that they are given. For example, by acting as buddies, lunchtime servers and playground leaders. Staff support pupils well to develop into independent young people.

"Staff have strong subject knowledge. They choose appropriate activities to help most pupils to learn the curriculum well. In the early years, children make a strong start to their education.

"Staff provide them with many opportunities to hear and to use new words. High quality interactions from staff help to support children’s communication and language development."

Headteacher Andrew Brooks said: "I am delighted with the outcome from our recent Ofsted report, which reflects the excellent progress we have made as a school.

"We are particularly proud that Ofsted recognised that the school cares deeply about pupils' mental health and wellbeing and that pupils respond well to the high expectations that the school has of their achievement.

"We have a fantastic team here at Wiggonby.

"We all work hard for the benefit of our pupils, who enjoy attending their school and who are 'excellent ambassadors for the school' - a superb reflection of Wiggonby C of E Primary School."
