The holiday season is a truly magical time as we come together and celebrate one of the most important days in our calendar. 

There are so many things to enjoy over Christmas time like food, drink, presents, and spending quality time with friends and family. 

One thing that we all love though is Christmas movies. They truly are such a magical way to really get into the Christmas spirit. 

With so many to choose from it's sometimes hard to pick the right one. Here at the News & Star, we've picked our top five Christmas movies.

Home Alone

Home Alone is a true Christmas classic, released in 1990 it has been a firm favourite on our screens for decades. 

The film follows eight-year-old Kevin who is accidentally left behind when his family leaves for France.

Whilst he enjoys it at first he soon has to put up a fight when thieves try to invade his home. 

Home Alone stars Macauley Culkin in the lead role and Joe Pesci as the lead villain. 

The Holiday 

This Christmas classic from 2006 follows two girls from different countries who swap homes for the holidays to get away from their relationship issues.

However, their lives change unexpectedly when they meet and fall in love with two local guys.

The movie has a star-studded cast of Kate Winslet, Jack Black, Jude Law, and Cameron Diaz. 

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

This 2002 film starring Jim Carrey follows The Grinch who lives in solitude just outside Whoville. He hates the townsfolk and despises Christmas.

Cindy Lou, a six-year-old girl who believes in the spirit of the festival, sets out to reform him.

The Polar Express 

This 2004 animated classic tells the story of a young boy who boards a train and embarks on an extraordinary journey to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus.

His life takes a turn after he encounters special people that make his journey memorable.

Elf

Elf, the holiday family favourite starring Will Ferrel tells the story of Buddy, a human, who is raised amongst elves at the North Pole.

When he discovers that he is not an elf, he travels to New York to search for his biological father.
