'Don't let this happen to another family' - plea after icy weather driving tragedy

THE HEARTBROKEN family of a Silloth woman who died because her boyfriend drove too fast in icy conditions are backing a campaign that urges motorists to match their driving to weather conditions.

Lana Maddison, 19, was a rear seat passenger in a car that was being driven by her boyfriend Joseph Rowland in November, 2021.

Despite icy road conditions, he attempted to negotiate a bend on the A591 near Keswick at more than 50mph, losing control of his Ford Fiesta and crashing into a tree.

Cannabis courier was stopped on M6 during Covid pandemic

AN Armed Forces veteran who performed drug and cash runs up the M6 to Carlisle to pay off arrears told police when stopped on the M6: “I’m going to prison for this.”

And Ricky Edward Harvey, now aged 43, received his inevitable jail term at the city’s crown court today (Tuesday) from a judge who heard the defendant’s illegal activity spanned 18 months.

Bradford-based Harvey was stopped while behind the wheel of a speeding Ford Focus on the motorway, northbound, near Carlisle on December 29, 2020, while strict tier Covid restrictions were in force.

Forestry firm owner found to be drink-driving had drunk 'three pints'

AN Eden Valley forestry firm owner was found to be drink-driving after police spotted his vehicle tax had expired.

Michael Richardson, 29, was heading home to Brougham, near Penrith, on the A66 in a Toyota Hilux just after 11pm on November 3 when officers pulled him over.

“The reason for the stop was expired tax,” prosecutor Lee Dacre told Carlisle Magistrates’ Court.

Motorist heading home from Kendal Calling caused horror crash

A PENRITH woman now walks with a limp after suffering terrible injuries in an A66 crash caused by a motorist heading home from work at Kendal Calling music festival.

Dean Shakespeare, 45, was driving an eastbound Nissan Qashqai which veered suddenly from lane two of a dual carriageway section into a collision with a Fiat Panda preparing to leave a layby.

The Fiat driver Caroline Musimwa had recently relocated to Penrith, and was travelling to visit her sister in Cambridge at 4.30pm on Monday, August 1, 2022.

Six suspects appear in court after car 'used as weapon' in Carlisle street brawl

SIX people have appeared in court after a man and woman were badly hurt when a car was allegedly used as a weapon on a residential Carlisle street.

Five men and a woman were jointly charged following an incident which was said to have occurred just after 6am on Tuesday, 24th October, at Gloucester Road, behind Blackwell Road, in Currock.

Police responded amid a report of fighting in the street with officers finding a woman and a man, both aged in their 40s, with serious injuries.  These were described as “serious but not life-threatening”, a police spokesman had said.

Carlisle man sentenced for stabbing assault with scissors

A CARLISLE man, Jordan Burgess, 19, was sentenced to two years eight months at Carlisle Crown Court on November 24.

Burgess, of Oaklands Drive, was also issued a five year restraining order.

Burgess had stayed at a property on Silloth Street on March 3, and returned the following day at 2.30am where he was asked to leave by the property occupier.

Baby murder case shows the deadly influence of opiate addiction, says top detective

DALLAS Kelly’s life had barely begun.

Just four-months-old, he was shaken to death by the father who should have moved heaven and earth to protect him.

Reece Kelly, 31, showed no emotion as he was sentenced to life in jail, with a minimum 18-year term. Dallas’s mother Georgia Wright, 23, also failed to protect her baby son. Convicted of child cruelty, she was jailed for three years.
