AUTUMN truly is a wonderful time of year.

It's also a great time to get outdoors if it isn't too cold, and explore the countryside that Cumbria has to offer.

The colour scheme at this time of year is truly magical as we can see all kinds of shades of orange, yellow, and brown.

It really does give a whole different perspective on the area that we live in and help to make it all the more appealing.

As we know the Lake District is abundant in places to enjoy the autumn colours, but we wanted to introduce you to some hidden gems.

These may be a place you visit regularly or you may not have heard of them before, but all of these areas are well worth a visit, especially in the autumn sunshine.

Longlands Lake

The lake is on the site of the former Longlands iron ore mine but by 1924 it was abandoned.

In 1939 the mine started to subside, flooding the area to create what is now Longlands Lake.

The area has become a haven for wildlife and is made up of an open pond, the confluence of two rivers, and lots of shrubbery and grassland.

It is well worth a visit all year round and is just a stone's throw from the village of Cleator.

Clints Quarry

This wildlife reserve is a former limestone quarry dating back over a hundred years.

It is within a short walking distance of Egremont via the cycle path.

There is an array of grassy areas, deep man-made ponds, and rock faces with a steep path taking you in a loop through it.

Talkin Tarn

This pond area near Brampton is an ideal place for a day out with the family.

There are ancient woodlands and glacial tarns to be enjoyed.

Workington to Marport coastal path

This delightful coastal path leads you through Flimby and into Maryport.

It enjoys incredibly scenic views of the Solway Firth and would be the perfect place to see an autumn sunset.

St Bees Head

This iconic cliff face overlooks the quaint tourist village of St Bees.

You can also look over towards the Isle of Man and enjoy some of the best views of the West Cumbrian coast in the county.
