A hat worn by 'Sherlock Holmes' and a diamond encrusted watch are all to go under the hammer a Carlisle auction house.

Laidlaw Auctioneers and Valuers are set to hold their Christmas sale where a number of historic items are up for grabs. 

A stand out in the jewellery section is a Cartier Santos 100 mid-sized diamond-set stainless steel wristwatch, an iconic brand and an iconic watch to match.

The bezel and case is set with diamond brilliants with the winding crown set with a further diamond. This lot carries a pre-sale estimate of £3,000 to £5,000.

The auction also includes a coin considered to be among the most beautiful ever minted, a Gothic crowns of 1847.

One of just 800 minted, it bears a profile bust of the young Queen Victoria in the Gothic Revival style.

Sherlock Holmes is a classic known by all, the books by Arthur Conan Doyle have been adapted to film and TV a number of times with the 1960s BBC series starring Peter Cushing being a fan favourite.

"In this sale we have the iconic deerstalker hat worn by Cushing during the production," said the auctioneers. "All that’s missing is the pipe!"

Consigned by a collector in Australia, this iconic Sherlock Holmes hat carries a pre-sale estimate of £300 to £500.

From closer to home is a large and varied group of ceramics formerly from Lowther Castle, the ancestral home of the Earls of Lowther.

Ranging from 18th Century Chinese export porcelain through to the finest 19th Century Meissen and Sevres, some bearing the Lowther family cipher.

The auctioneers anticipate strong international interest in these lots.

Amongst the military section of the auction are a group of items relating to Admiral of the Fleet Roger John Brownlow Keyes, 1st Baron Keyes, (1872 – 1945).

During the First World War Keyes was planned and led the famous raids on the German submarine pens in the Belgian ports of Zeebrugge and Ostend.

These each carry estimates in the region of £500-1000.

The December sale will be a three day event taking place from November 30 to December 2 December with bidding online and in the room.

Viewing will be held from Wednesday, November 29 and during the auction. All are welcome.
