A special service has been held at Carlisle Cathedral recognising all those involved with law and order in the city.

The judges service saw all of the judges from Carlisle Court process into the quire of the cathedral in all of their legal finery and they were joined by many of their legal colleagues from the court.

Other prominent figures present at the cathedral included the mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Abdul Harid, the leader of Cumberland Council, Mark Fryer, the police, fire and crime commissioner for Cumbria, Peter McCall, the high sheriff of Cumbria for 2023, Samantha Scott and the Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Alexander Scott.

The service took the shape of traditional choral matins with the talented cathedral choir, directed by Mark Duthie and expertly accompanied by Ed Taylor on the organ, leading the singing alongside two talented trumpet players who played fanfares from the organ loft.

The service was led by the cathedral clergy, including the new dean, the Very Reverend Jonathan Brewster who was only installed as dean of Carlisle in September.

In a post, Carlisle Cathedral said: “We were honoured to host the annual Judges' Service and following reception. Thank you to everyone who attended and took part in this special service.

The next major occasion at the cathedral is on Sunday, November 12 as they mark remembrance Sunday with a special service before advent begins on Sunday, December 3.
