The Whitehaven Coastguard team has been conducting training sessions on the harbourside.

This involved a rope rescue scenario near The Beacon at the marina.

A spokesperson said: "The scenario was a fallen youth, which had been located by our team as part of a Missing Person Search coordinated by HM Coastguard.

"Within the constraints of a tight working area, the team readied the Rope Rescue Technical for an accompanied decent with another team member as medic.

"Due to the limited space, an Indirect Lead for the main line was established, redirecting the line 90 degrees to run parallel to the edge and enable sufficient hauling space, making use of a tree as a natural anchor.

Other elements of the setup required use of both double and triple steak holdfasts, along with pin kits providing work positioning restraints for the Edge Safety Officers.

"The work positioning restraints enable safe working within the danger area (where there is a risk of fall from height), such as setting up of the obelisk and assisting the Technician with safe accompanied descent and recovery of the stretcher over the edge.

"Having concluded the full evolution of setup, descent, assessment and treatment of casualty, recovery of casualty, then recovery of medic we set about conducting our post user checks and repacking of the equipment.

"With everything completed in under 2 hours, the team returned to station to debrief over a nice warm brew."

They added: "From Rope Rescue (cliff/structure/vessel access etc), Water Rescue, Mud Rescue, casualty evacuation, vessels in distress, Lost & Missing Persons Searches, suspicious items (ordnance/pyrotechnics), Royal Fish (whales, sturgeons, porpoises and dolphins) etc, then we’ve got you covered should you need us.
