A Cumbrian ale is now on tap at Parliament’s iconic Strangers' Bar after a successful year.

Great Corby Brewhouse’s 3.4 per cent limited edition ale, Tizzie Whizie, was unveiled in parliament this week, with brewery director, Sandra Hall and owner David Corkill, going to London for the grand unveiling.

The 3.4% beer packed with citrus recently won the highly prestigious SIBA Gold Award by the Society of Independent Brewers, who also attended Strangers' Bar to taste the fine ale.

The Brewery also won Bronze and Silver for their Coffee Milk Stout and Fox brown Ale respectively.

Bringing a distinctly Cumbrian flavour to Westminster, Tizzie Whizie is named after the mythical creature with the body of a hedgehog, the wings of a bee and the tail of a squirrel that is said to inhabit Bowness-on-Windermere.

“We were immensely proud to have Tizzie Whizie featured at the Strangers Bar in the House of Parliament,” said Sandra Hall, Great Corby Brewhouse director.

“This momentous occasion has left us all at Great Corby Brewhouse beaming with pride, we are all standing a little taller today, knowing that our labour of love has garnered such recognition.

“On the advice of our local MP, we wrote to the Strangers’ Bar in parliament about the beer, how it's double-hopped, and quite a long time later I got a note saying that they’d like to try it... and then it won the gold award too.”

“It is a really popular beer and has a nice, unique flavour so it tastes like a stronger beer than it is but it's like a session IPA.”

Since the pandemic, Great Corby Brewhouse has gone from strength to strength taking on a local apprentice and selling in pubs and shops across the North of England.

The brewery has had support from Penrith and the Border MP, Dr Neil Hudson who has visited the brewery and their associated pubs and restaurants on a number of occasions.

Dr Neil Hudson MP said: "It was a delight to welcome David and Sandra to Strangers' Bar in Parliament to sample their cracking new Cumbrian beer - Tizzie Whizie - and toast their recent success at the SIBA Awards.

"The team have bucked the national trend and gone from strength to strength through hard work and dedication to the craft of beermaking, so it was only right to see their brilliant beer at the heart of one of our nation's great institutions.”

The brewery team have taken their first set of barrels to parliament and if it sells well, the bar will take more barrels for the next three months.
