A BROADBAND provider has cut jobs at its headquarters in Carlisle whilst it looks to slow network expansion and raise capital.
Grain Connect Ltd, on Cooper Way, has acknowledged temporary staffing reductions of about 20 nationwide, with 'less than half' of positions being removed from their Carlisle headquarters.
The step was part of their plan to focus on attracting additional capital to gear up for further expansion in 2024.
A spokesperson from Grain Connect said: "Raising capital at this time is taking longer than it did a year ago.
"As a result, we have taken the decision to temporarily reduce the level of our network expansion, while we raise further capital to accelerate in 2024.
"As a result, we are reducing around 20 roles across the country, with less than half of those in our Carlisle Headquarters," they said.
Despite this, the firm states the business foundations are strong, with a 'growing customer base'.
The company assures, however, that, even following the staff reductions, it still employs 48 per cent more people at its Carlisle base than this time last year, committing to ongoing long-term investment in the area.
"Independent benchmarking shows our network deployment costs to be the lowest in the industry, giving us a strong competitive position.
"As a result of our low-cost network, strong customer take-up and low-cost operations, Grain has already created a sustainable business allowing us to provide low prices to our customers.
"The foundations of the business are strong, with a rapidly growing customer base, performing ahead of our business plan, showing there is a strong demand from our customers for our products.
"We deliver low-cost Full Fibre broadband to thousands of customers in the Carlisle area and many more across the rest of the country.
"After this reduction, we still have 48 per cent more employees in Carlisle than we did at this time last year and expect to continue investing in Carlisle over the long term," a spokesperson said.
