THE recent State of Nature report for the UK was disappointing, as we are still not meeting targets to improve the condition of our wildlife.

However, the Lake District Wildlife Park continues to strive forward with its efforts.

The motto at the Park is “Conservation at our Heart” and for many years they have been conserving native wildlife on their hay meadows, woodland, rivers and lake shore as well as protecting exotic species.

They are just not very good at shouting about it! And the other way in which the staff contribute to conservation is through raising awareness and education.

During October half term the education department gets together with other organisations and celebrates all the native wildlife we have in Cumbria.

Many people visit the Park to see its swinging gibbons, leaping lemurs, sleepy red pandas, and soaring birds of prey.

However, this is a special event where the staff also talk about owls, bats, hedgehogs, red squirrels, otters, adders, fish and so much more. There is also a lot of natural wonders to look at including conkers, acorns, autumn leaves and chestnuts.

The main aim of the week has always been to inspire both adults and children to learn more about native wildlife.

With artefacts including skulls, teeth, feathers, footprints, and animal poop visitors can discover how amazing animals are and have lots of fun whilst doing so.

This year the Park will have plenty of information and displays about all the wildlife there is to discover in Cumbria.

Their education officer, Lucy will be on hand to help with fun activities including whose feather? Whose footprint? And whose poo?

Joining the Park this year on Tuesday October 24 they have Cumbria Wildlife Trust and the Cumbria Wildlife Crime Prevention Unit and on Wednesday, October 25 they have Binsey Red Squirrel Group.

In addition, if that isn’t enough, there are leaf rubbing and craft activities…and of course don’t forget all about the lovely animals you can go and hand feed and visit.
