A GASTROPUB is not just rebuilding from a devastating fire but thriving - with the added boost of a recent glowing review from Cumbria's renowned food critic, Grace Dent.

The George and Dragon in Clifton continues to flourish after an electrical fire ripped through the building in 2022, forcing a year-long closure to the business

Head chef Gareth Webster shared his initial apprehension regarding Grace Dent's review.

"We didn't know she was coming. Two weeks before it was coming we got told a review was coming," he said.

"We were on tenterhooks then as we didn't know if it was good or bad. We were really made up when it came out... the fact she enjoyed it."

Adopting a farm-to-table method, many of the ingredients used in their dishes are sourced from their family farms and kitchen gardens at nearby Askham Hall - which gave Grace plenty to commend.

Grace Dent's review for The Guardian paints a vivid picture of the unique charm that The George and Dragon offers, describing it as "part pub, part living history", praising the curried scotch egg and their homemade pies along her culinary journey.

Charles Lowther and his family undertook the task of restoring the pub in 2008, and it has since become a cherished establishment, both for locals and tourists.

"We've only just reopened back in June and we've been full-on since then," Gareth said.

"But when someone says something nice about you, it's always good.  We've even seen a spike in the bookings since the review came out."
