A COUPLE hope to plan a family holiday as their honeymoon after a brief 'mini moon' in Newcastle.

Nicky and Kayleigh Thornthwaite from Carlisle met through mutual friends in August 2017 and found themselves inseparable ever since.

It was not long until production worker Nicky, 33, decided to pop the question - but not in the way he had planned.

Passenger assistant Kayleigh, 27, said: "We were at home on April 18 2019 and I ruined the proposal!

"Nicky said he had needed to go into town for something but he had been gone for ages.

"So when he got back, I kept asking him and going on and on until he finally said: 'Will you marry me?'

"He was going to wait until the weekend because we were going away that weekend to the Isle of Man."

Kayleigh's hen do was a surprise party with friends and family, whereas Nicky had an 80s night at the Old Fire Station in Lancaster.

The couple later married at Carlisle register office in front of 30 guests on July, 22 2023.

Kayleigh said: "The day was perfect and we can't decide what the best moment was.

"We arrived in a Mercedes Vito and S Class and had our best man Chris Crooks, bridesmaids Susan Witherington and Stacey Atkinson and our three-year-old son William as a page boy in special roles for the big day.

"Our wedding rings were plain gold bands from H. Samuel and our bouquets included roses and carnations which were my grandad's favourite flowers and was a lovely tribute to him as he is no longer here."

They had a meal at 2pm then welcomed 60 night guests and enjoyed an 8pm buffet.

They cut a three-tier Victoria sponge cake, with blue flowers supplied from Cafe Isabella.

Their guest favours were delicious chocolates from Castle Chocolates and they finished the night dancing as husband and wife to 'I Cant Help Myself' by the Four Tops.

"We had a mini-moon in Newcastle but we are planning a family holiday abroad," she added.
