A Coronation Wood honouring King Charles III will be established by Forestry England in Cumbria.

The soon-to-be Sleetbeck Wood, at Roadhead near Longtown, will engulf an expanse of 63 hectares and connect with the already managed Kershope Forest.

Positioned just over 13 miles from Carlisle, the new forest will house a combination of broadleaf and conifer trees, offering abundant wildlife habitats, a beautiful space for the public, and a sustainable source of timber.

Sleetbeck Wood will be designed as a quiet woodland for local people to explore and enjoy.

It will incorporate existing forest road networks from Kershope Forest.

Forestry England will present draft plans for Sleetbeck Wood at a public consultation at Roadhead Public Hall on November 1, between 4pm and 7pm.

Local community members and organisations are encouraged to contribute their thoughts and suggestions so they can be considered before final decisions are made.

An online platform is also open for public opinions until November 9.

Once finalised, the plans will be put forward to the Forestry Commission for approval.

Kevin May, Forest Management Director, said: “We’re very excited to share the news that Forestry England has bought new land for woodland creation in North East Cumbria.

"The new Sleetbeck Wood will become part of the nation’s forests we care for in perpetuity, allowing people to enjoy and explore it in every season and support their health and wellbeing.

“Planning and planting a brand new woodland is an exciting moment and we’re doing the detailed work of deciding the right mix of tree species which will flourish in the soil and climate conditions here.

"We’re looking carefully at the many different benefits this woodland will bring in the decades ahead including how Sleetbeck Wood can boost biodiversity and help nature recovery across the wider landscape.

“Through our public consultation event and online, we welcome everyone to look at our proposals and get involved as the woodland plans take shape and look forward to this woodland becoming a much-loved feature in the years to come.”

Sleetbeck Wood aligns with Forestry England's target to establish several Coronation Woods to pay tribute to the Coronation of King Charles III.

Its creation is facilitated through the Government's Nature for Climate Fund.

The organisation will plant multiple forests by 2026 that will collectively span over 2,000 hectares.

Updates on Sleetbeck Wood's progress can be followed on the Forestry England website.
