People across the North East and North Cumbria are urged to 'be wise, immunise' by booking flu and Covid-19 vaccinations online.

Over 1.3 million individuals across the region, eligible for both free vaccinations, are now able to book appointments on the national booking system.

This can also be done through the NHS app or by dialling 119.

Dr Neil O'Brien, the medical director at NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB) said: "Last winter, NHS staff treated significant numbers of patients in hospital with respiratory illnesses such as flu and Covid-19."

"This winter we are asking people to 'be wise, immunise' as the risks of COVID-19 and flu are still real and the vaccines provide the best possible protection against serious illness."

The region is fast approaching its one million vaccination marker since September.

More than 590,000 residents have already accepted their flu vaccine, with over 400,000 also securing their COVID-19 shot.

159,930 individuals chose to receive both vaccines simultaneously.

Flu vaccines are currently being administered in schools and community clinics to school-age children.

Two and three-year-olds are invited to obtain vaccinations from their local GP surgery.
