THE granddaughter of a former Cumbrian nurse now living in Canada has been amazed at the response from her former hometown after an appeal was launched for cards to celebrate her 100th birthday.
Marjorie Try, originally from Tirril but now living in Ontario, will be celebrating her centenary year on November 8.
Her granddaughter posted the appeal on a Penrith Facebook group, with hopes of surprising her grandmother.
In 1945, Marjorie received her general nursing certificate before undergoing additional training at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

In 1955, she moved to Canada with her husband Edward and son Tony.
Her granddaughter, Kaitlyn Williams said: "The outpouring of support and response to nanny's birthday has been insane - I never expected this.
"Thank you so much to everyone for their support, we are so excited for nanny's birthday," she said.
The family’s Canadian address was shared by Kaitlyn in hopes of orchestrating a delightful surprise for her grandmother, who she says will love 'any and all cards' she receives.
