A PROMINENT Whitehaven pub which closed its doors a year ago looks set to be reopening.

The Three Tuns pub on the corner of Scotch Street and Duke Street had been a part of the town for decades.

The pub closed during the coronavirus pandemic and was then reopened by businessman Graham Wishart in August last year.

But three months later it was announced that the venue would be closing again after there had been noise complaints.

A chalkboard outside The Three Tuns now reads, ’14 days to open day’. It is not yet clear who has taken over the pub, which had been advertised as available to rent for some time.

The news has been welcomed by past punters who enjoyed drinking in the pub in its heyday.

Alexander Telford said: “It would be good to open again but it would have to be along the same lines as always. I couldn’t see it being a wine bar. My best memories are bikes all the way to the park gates in the days when everybody met up to go on safari.”

Peter Boyle said: “It was a great bar when Mildred Tubman had it. My auntie, Sally Ferguson worked behind the bar. I often popped in for a pint or three when I came home on leave from the Royal Navy.

“Fond memories of it as we lived in Scotch Street. All the bikers used it. It was a great wee pub. I think it would be a good thing reopening the Tuns.”

John O'Brien said: "I think it's great it's going to open but I think they need a cheap lager and bitter to get people to come in as its a long walk to the Tuns with no pubs near it now.

"When it was briefly opened the drink was too expensive and the good drinkers went to other pubs when it was shut.

"I had my 50th birthday party in the Tuns a long time ago spent many a great night in there."

Tom Thistle said: "It wouldn't be a bad thing but I do think The Three Tuns has had its day.

"I remember it being a biker / hippy bar in the 70s and I was in there every opening time I was able to.

"Too many memories and too many friends and good times to mention. The Tuns is very high on my halcyon days list. Loved the place. The Mildred and Harry years were by far the best."

Chris Hayes, mayor of Whitehaven, said: “It’s got to be a rock bar. We need one for younger people.”
