A Cumbrian hotel is in the running for a prestigious industry award, recognised by one of the world's most important hotel and tourism media bodies.

Hazel Bank Country House, in Borrowdale, won the ‘Best Small and Exclusive Property’ award for 2023’s Conde Nast Travel Awards for Excellence.

This year, they are again up for the award, shortlisted alongside Walwick Hall in Hexham and 11 Cadogan Gardens in London.

The award has several categories and accolades are given to hotels across the UK, Europe, and the Mediterranean.

Winners form part of the following year’s travel guide which is well-read across the world.

Gary McRae, manager of the Lake District hotel, said: “It is always an honour.

“Conde Nast is worldwide and industry-recognised, and we are always humbled to be shortlisted, and even the fact that we have won from them, it’s all a testament to what we do.”

On what makes them tick amid heavy competition in the tourism-rich Lakes, Mr McRae said: “Because we are a small country house hotel in a beautiful situation, we are in the same boat as everybody else in terms of being in a lovely setting and a lovely building, but what sets us aside is that we always put out guests first.

“It is all about hospitality and looking after the minutiae, we make sure that everyone who stays with us gets a personalised welcome to the Lake District.

“I want people to fall in love with the area.

“I cannot always guarantee that everyone who stays with us will come back, but what I aim to do is to get them to fall in love with Borrowdale, and if they do, hopefully they will return.”

The award winners will be announced on November 6 this year in London.
