A special pet service will be held near Cockermouth to celebrate all our much-loved animals - and it's hoped many will attend with their owners.

Previous services have been attended by lots of dogs, as well as a goat, chicken and guinea pigs.

The annual Christ Church Pet Service will take place on Sunday, October 15, at St Bridget’s Church, Bridekirk.

This will be be the fourth service lead by Jean Tyers. She was inspired to do it following the loss of her much-loved Border Collie Mirk, about whom she wrote a book.

"I organise them because of my faith and belief that God created the whole world, including every living creature. They all have a place in our life, the environment and earth," said Jean.

"People can come together and thank God for their pets and ask for help in caring and looking after them."

Guest speaker will be Libby Robinson, with her fell pony Marnie. She will give a short talk about the history, past, present and future of the importance of protecting our heritage in Cumbria, as well as their contribution to conservation and the positive impact they have on local biodiversity.

"If they would like, people can say what's special about their pet and maybe how they acquired it and their role in caring for it," said Jean.

"I hope people will come along with their pet - dogs on leads and small animals in cages - and enjoy a service of praise and worship together with a blessing for our pets."

The service starts at 3pm. Refreshments will be served afterwards, with an opportunity to donate to The Fell Pony Heritage Trust.
