FOLLOWING a fire at an industrial yard that led to residents being evacuated from their homes, the firm involved has 'stood down' all specialist services to focus on 'remedial action'.

The blaze broke out at the Tyson H Burridge Ltd site in Distington, Workington, on Friday, September 15, mobilising a large-scale emergency response.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was 'accidental', originating within one of the parked HGVs on site.

Ian Seel, area manager at Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: "Our preliminary fire investigation has discounted any suspicious circumstances regarding the cause of the fire in Distington at the weekend.

"We believe that the fire was accidental and originated within a HGV parked on the site.

"This is based on all of the information known at this time and may change if new information comes to light," he said.

There were no reported casualties, with residents taking shelter at the local community centre as the fire continued overnight.

On Saturday, September 16, Cumbria's Fire and Rescue Service said confirmed the fire had been extinguished.

In a statement released by managing director of Tyson H Burridge Ltd, Neil Robinson, today (September 18), he said: "On Friday, September 15 a fire broke out at the Tyson H Burridge Site in Distington, Workington.

"Emergency services were notified immediately and the fire was brought under control and extinguished by the local fire brigade.

"We continue to work closely with the Environmental Agency to address issues arising in order to minimise impact to local residents and the environment," he said.

Nearby residents have been cautioned to keep doors and windows closed due to residual odour.

"At this time we have stood down all specialist services to concentrate on any required remedial action and would express our thanks to the local residents for their understanding as to what has been a difficult 48 hours for all concerned," Mr Robinson said.

At the time of the fire, the community rallied to support their neighbours, providing shelter for those evacuated and ensuring the elderly were safe.

Praise was given to the emergency services on Facebook for their quick response, also commending one another for their support during the potential threat.
