A Cumbrian mayor recently held a civic service at a church close to his heart.

Wigton mayor Christopher Scott was christened at the Cornerstone Methodist Church 40 years ago, and last week held his civic service at the same venue.

The concept of a civic service has ancient links when religious and civic institutions were closely intertwined, Mr Scott said.

“The purpose of bringing together the church and the town council is to foster unity, cooperation, and mutual respect between these two pillars of society.

“This convergence serves as a testament to the shared values and common goals that underpin both religious and civic communities,” he said.

The service was led by methodist minister Philip Jackson and featured a musical performance by the church band, with patriotic hymns like "I Vow to Thee My Country" and "How Great Thou Art" then finishing off with the national anthem.

Mr Scott thanked all the guests that came to support him, including his wife Paula Scott, her sister and her wife Heather Scott and Gail Marguerite, several other Cumbrian mayors and councillors, Workington MP Mark Jenkinson, the band, photographer, congregation, and workers in the kitchen.
