Summer may well be drawing to a close but that will do little to dampen the spirits of keen walkers, who travel to Cumbria throughout the year to enjoy the many green spaces and walks that the county has to offer.

In today’s Reader's Choice we look at the walks from across the county that you named as your favourites, with perhaps a few more warm-weather walks on the cards before the wintery weather returns for good.

1. DODD WOOD

Dodd Wood is a fantastic place to get some stunning views of the northern Lake District. The network of walking trails will take you deep into the woodland and you can walk to the top of Dodd Summit for views across the fells.

Overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake, the wood is also popular with nature lovers and offers bird watchers the chance to see the famous Bassenthwaite ospreys that nest on the lake shore every year.

2. WHINLATTER FOREST

Another Lake District destination, Whinlatter Forest is described as England's only true mountain forest and is home to stunning views, fantastic walks, and rare wildlife.

While its mountainous terrain makes it ideal for bikers, walkers have also long enjoyed the unrivalled views across Bassenthwaite Lake, Derwentwater and Keswick.

3. GRIZEDALE FOREST

Nestling right in the heart of the Lake District between Windermere and Coniston, Grizedale Forest offers eight waymarked walking trails, including the easy-access Ridding Wood trail to the more strenuous Silurian Way taking in the summit of Carron Crag.

4. ENNERDALE FOREST

Ennerdale is rarely busy, being a long way from the tourist attractions of central Lakeland. There are more than 20 miles of forest road, and many other paths open to the public in the Ennerdale valley.

This beautiful walk also offers stunning views of the many pretty streams and cascading waterfalls that run down into the river.

5. HALLINGHAG WOOD

Located on the shores of Ullswater, this delightful walk is a long one but offers beautiful scenery, as well as an ancient oak woodland habitat.

The route is extremely popular with hikers, runners, and walkers, so you will likely encounter other people when exploring.
