Penrith made the most of their home game at Brunton Park - with a victory in the FA Vase.

Darren Edmondson's side had the use of Carlisle United's stadium at a time their own ground is out of action.

And the Bonny Blues enjoyed a successful outing on the League One stage, defeating Pickering Town 3-1 in the Vase first qualifying round.

Former United favourite Edmondson's side went behind to a Cole Roberts goal in the first half before Oliver Reay levelled.

The same player put Penrith ahead before Ronan Irving clinched victory.

The result earned Penrith £550 in prize money and a second qualifying round trip to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion.

Carlisle allowed Penrith to use Brunton Park with the Northern League Division One club's Leo Group Stadium currently having an artificial pitch installed.

Edmondson and club officials have spoken of their gratitute to the Blues for stepping in to help.

Penrith have also played an FA Cup game at Carlisle City's Three Rivers Health & Safety Consultancy Stadium this season, as well as switching another cup 'home' game to the home of opponents Consett - while all their league games to date have been away.

Their own ground is expected to be back in action in late September.

Also in the Vase, there was an entertaining 5-3 home victory for Carlisle City against Garstang.

Goals from Rob McCartney, Jordan Palmer, Sam Atkinson, Jack Dickinson and Jay Kelly were enough for Jim Nichols' side to progress.

They will take on Newcastle Benfield away from home in the second qualifying round.

A third Cumbrian club made it through with Kendal Town thrashing Route One Rovers 6-1 to set up a home clash with Newcastle University.

In Northern Premier League Premier Division, meanwhile, Workington Reds picked up their second win of the season with a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Stafford Rangers.

Two goals from Dav Symington were enough for Danny Grainger's side to prevail at Borough Park.

North of the border, meanwhile, Peter Murphy's Annan Athletic claimed their first ever victory in Scottish League One.

The Galabank side came from behind to defeat Edinburgh City 3-2 at home.

After trailing 2-0, two Dom Docherty goals levelled things before fit-again sub Tommy Goss struck the winner in the 86th minute.

In the Lowland League, Gretna 2008 also picked up their first win of the season by defeating Civil Service Strollers 2-1 at Raydale Park, thanks to goals from Jamie Armstrong and a trialist.
