Laidlaw Auctioneers and Valuers in Carlisle is set to hold its next auction this week with a wide range of collectibles and items on sale for all tastes.

As usual the sale includes a strong offering of militaria, perhaps most notably a Great War Distinguished Conduct Medal awarded to a Lieutenant F Salter of the 16th Battalion the Manchester Regiment.

The citation for Salter’s gallantry medal reads “For conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty. This man remained at his post till almost surrounded, when he broke through, bayonetting four of the enemy and shooting several others. He did magnificent service.”

In something slightly different, Laidlaw is offering a number of retro game consoles.

From Nintendo to SAGA they have all the top names from the golden age of gaming.

The Nintendo 64 console has been described as a ‘party machine’ and with ports for up to four players it’s a perfect retro addition to any party or games night. Price estimates range from £20 to £100

Charles Thurnam was a letterpress printer and newspaper publisher based in Carlisle, he began by founding the first ‘reticulating’ library many years before public libraries we established in the UK.

His obituary in the Carlisle Patriot in 1852 described him as “extensively known and highly respected, establishing one of the most flourishing bookselling, stationery and printing businesses in the North of England.”

In the upcoming sale Laidlaw has a handful of fascinating broadsides (an early form of poster) printed by Thurnam and promoting entertainments and political stances.

One in particular stand out as promoting a performance by African-American actor Ira Frederick Aldridge in the George Assembly Room, Penrith.
