World Cup winner Paul Simpson is backing the Lionesses to make England football history today.

Sarina Wiegman’s side take on Spain in the World Cup final in Australia (kick-off 11am UK time).

And Simpson, who led the men’s Under-20s to the global title back in 2017, is full of praise for the women’s team and their exploits in the tournament so far.

“It’s absolutely fantastic,” the Carlisle United manager said.

“I thought they were outstanding against Australia in the semi-final, they played really well – absolutely deserved to win the game.

“I think over the tournament, even though they probably haven’t performed as well as everybody expected, I think they’ve looked really comfortable.

“They’ve grown into the tournament, which you have to do, and I’m sure they’re going into the game favourites.

“I don’t think it’ll be easy against Spain because they’re a good side, but I think the girls have done absolutely brilliantly and hopefully they’re able to go the one step further.”

England’s starting line-up against Spain is set to include Cumbrian midfielder Georgia Stanway.

The Barrow-born star has been a key player throughout England’s impressive run under Wiegman.

The head coach’s main selection decision concerns whether to recall Lauren James after suspension.

Ella Toone impressed in her absence with a goalscoring display in the semi-final against Australia’s Matildas.

It is the first time the Lionesses have reached a World Cup final with England hoping to follow last year’s memorable European Championships success with the global title.

Spain are marginal favourites at 8/5 with England 7/4 to lift the trophy in Sydney.

The final is live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and ITV.

Radio coverage is on BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Sounds and talkSport.
