CUMBRIA Police seized thousands of illegal vapes over the last two years, an FOI request revealed.

In 2022 the police seized 4,660 vape units, and in 2021, it seized 1,223, representing a 281 per cent increase. Before 2021, there is no record of the police seizing an illegal vape.

There was a slight decrease in the number of cigarette packs seized. In 2021 14,213 packs were seized and in 2022, the police took in 13,000 packs.

The request was submitted by Vape Club, an online vaping store. It was sent to 167 local councils across the UK, and the data shows all the vapes, cigarettes and tobacco products seized in the UK since 2016.

Illegal vapes do not abide by the legal nicotine limit of 20mg per ml and can contain chemicals such as tin, nickel, lead or THC, the active compound in cannabis. A number of countries across the world have banned vaping altogether or made it heavily restricted.
