International market to return to Carlisle city centre

Organised by Market Place Europe and supported by Cumberland Council, shoppers will be spoilt for choice with a huge mix of authentic continental treats.

The market will feature stalls open from 9am to 6pm on Thursday, August 24, Friday, August 25, and Saturday, August 26.

On Sunday, August 27 and Bank Holiday Monday, the stalls will be open from 10am to 5pm.

The International Market will not only offer delicious food, but also a great selection of arts, crafts, unique gifts, and local traders.

Food lovers will have a tempting selection of continental and international flavours to sample, including Spanish paella, Greek gyros, Chinese, Indian, Polish, and German street foods.

A new Greek vegan deli will also be serving tasty treats.

Visitors can find fresh foods such as olives, British cheeses and chutneys, cakes, salami, and pick and mix sweets.

The Box Bar will be on site offering cold beers and other beverages.

For those with green thumbs, the market will have a popular Dutch plant seller with a wonderful array of shrubs, plants, trees, and bulbs.

Andy Pidgen, Market Place Europe’s operations manager said: “Carlisle is a special place for Market Place Europe and the warm welcome we receive from local people and visitors alike is always amazing, it’s always great that so many local Carlisle and Cumbrian traders join us alongside our fantastic international traders, there is always something for everyone to enjoy at this fantastic market in the wonderful city of Carlisle.”

An ancient proclamation will be recited at the Market Cross on the Saturday at 10am.

This Proclamation declares Carlisle's rights to hold an annual Fair in August, a privilege granted to the citizens of the city in 1352 by Edward III.

A procession, led by The Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Abdul Harid, the Chair of Cumberland Council, Cllr Carni McCarron-Holmes, Sword and Mace Bearers, and other Civic dignitaries, will make its way from St Cuthbert’s Church to the Market Cross in the city centre.
