THE Lake District has been revealed as being one of the most relaxing UK holiday destinations to visit, according to new analysis.

England’s largest National Park was ranked second out of 10 other locations in the UK in a survey of 2,000 holidaymakers conducted by Sykes Holiday Cottages.

The dramatic landscapes and remoteness from everyday life were among the reasons as to why the UNESCO world heritage site was voted as one of the most ideal spots to unwind and relax.

The Lake District ranked behind Cornwall while the Scottish Highlands closely followed in third place for being the best spot to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life due to their tranquillity and beautiful scenery.

Graham Donoghue, chief executive of Sykes Holiday Cottages, said: “The Lake District is a sought-after holiday hotspot that continues to be popular among Brits, with many choosing to revisit the location year after year. The region is home to postcard-perfect villages as well as an abundance of walks for all abilities overlooking the epic countryside and world famous lakes.”

“The Lakes are synonymous with quiet relaxation and a sense of remoteness, despite being easily accessible from major cities across the country. With so many hidden gems to discover, the Lake District is a great spot for holidaymakers to explore as they chose to travel closer to home this year.”

“Our research has shown that many people are opting to have a break on home soil this year, and with the UK being home to so many diverse landscapes, vibrant towns and cities and secluded spots to discover - we really are spoilt for choice here.”

When heading on a UK break, nearly half of respondents (49%) said going on a scenic walk helps them relax when away, while 40% said listening to the sound of birds makes them less stressed, and 10% noted that an outdoor hot tub was essential to unwinding away from home.
