AN art student at Carlisle College has had her new work unveiled in the centre of Penrith.

Devonshire Arcade, in the heart of Penrith, has unveiled its new artwork this week which the result of a collaboration between the Arcade and Carlisle College.

Foundation Art & Design course student Lou Armstrong from Carlisle College of the Arts was selected as the winner of an art competition, seeing her designs, which depict the natural beauty and wildlife of Penrith town and the surrounding areas, wrapped onto the Arcade’s four central internal pillars.

Commenting on the project, winning art student Lou Armstrong said: “I was honoured to be selected as the winning entry for this collaboration between Devonshire Arcade and Carlisle College.

Local dignitaries, including the Mayor of Penrith, representatives from the Council, the College and retailers gathered together on Wednesday evening to mark the unveiling of the newly designed columns clad with the colourful and distinctive designs for shoppers and the community to see and enjoy.

“The project as a whole embodies what we are doing as a course – that is, supporting prospective artists to make their mark in communities.

Carlisle College has a reputation for producing high quality Cumbrian artists and Lou is no exception.
