Cumbrian keeper James Trafford has not been beaten in six hours of football at the European Under-21 Championships.

The England No1 kept his fourth consecutive clean sheet to help the young Lions reach the semi-finals.

Trafford, from Greysouthen, helped keep Portugal at bay as England won the quarter-final 1-0.

The Manchester City keeper was tested on a number of occasions but once again could not be beaten as Lee Carsley’s side went through.

Trafford’s fellow Cumbrian Jarrad Branthwaite was an unused substitute as Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon struck the only goal in the 34th minute.

England now face Israel on Wednesday for the chance to reach their first Euros final since 2009.

Trafford has emerged as one of the stars of the tournament thanks to his defiant and high-quality goalkeeping.

The 20-year-old is now firmly established as England U21s' No1 and has a great chance to help the team to silverware.

The Under-21s have not won the Euros since 1984 and, if they get past Israel - who they beat 2-0 in the group stage - they will face Spain, France or Ukraine in the final.

Trafford's exploits came on a day he was again linked with a move from Man City, where he has been since the age of 11 after being snapped up from Carlisle United's academy.

The Sun reported that Leicester City were keen on a loan deal for the young Cumbrian.

The Foxes' new boss is Enzo Maresca, the former Man City coach who has worked with Trafford.

It follows reports of interest from clubs including Burnley, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough.

The Cumbrian impressed for Bolton Wanderers in League One last season, keeping 26 clean sheets in 52 games in all competitions.
