Two charities have benefitted from a successful charity fun day run by a generous Cockermouth school.

Year 5 and 6 pupils at All Saints’ CE Primary School raised more than £500, which was split between Zarach, a UK charity which delivers beds and basics to children in poverty, and the North Lakes Foodbank.

The youngsters set up their own stalls in the playground. There was lots on offer, including a penalty shoot out, throw a sponge at a teacher, apple bobbing, cake/ toy/ book and jewellery stall.

Teacher Yvonne Dykes said: "I heard about Zarach on the radio and discussed this with the children.

"We all could not believe that in this country there are some children who do not have a bed - and the impacts this could have."

The school children went the extra mile and used the money raised for the foodbank to go shopping, thus turning it into food donations.

Jane Robinson, of the foodbank, said: "Pupils Eliana Robinson and Richard Graham used the ‘Bank the Food’ app to see what items the Foodbank was short of, making sure the money raised at the Charity Day was put to best use.

"They had great fun using the app and shopping.

"They bought 82kg of food with the money and dated it all for the foodbank as well. Well done Eliana and Richard."

The foodbank collects food donated from the local community and gives it to people who are in need. Last year over 7,600 people across the North Lakes area received emergency food. More than 750 children were fed in each of the school holidays through the Holiday Lunchpack Scheme.

Mrs Robinson hopes other people will use the app (more details at www.thefoodbank.org.uk).

All Saints' School will be holding a Summer Fair at Highfield Community Centre on Thursday, July 6, from 5pm. Everyone is welcome.

There will be bouncy castles, face painting, toy, teddy and book stalls, fancy goods emporium, cakes and more.
