WEST Lakes Academy are taking on a massive Wainwright's mountain challenge in memory of Clare McConnell, who passed away earlier this year.

Clare McConnell, passed away in March 2023 and the school said she was "a much-loved and highly-valued member of the West Lakes team for over 18 years, helping countless children to achieve well and to develop a love of learning along the way."

"Clare changed the lives of both students and colleagues during her time at WLA.

"She was much loved and is very much missed."

Clare and her family had planned to walk every Wainwright together, but were unable to meet this target before she passed.

Clare, and her family, completed 36 of the 214 Wainwrights.

Therefore, as an academy, West Lakes plan to complete the 2,278,032 steps that Clare would have taken to walk the remaining 178 Wainwrights, raising as much money as they can for Cancer Research UK.

From Monday, June 26 to Friday, July 14, the academy are going to count their steps and see if they can finish the job.

They will take part in a variety of activities including the Dent Dash on Saturday July 8, where West Lakes Academy’s staff and students are completing a sponsored walk up and down Dent together.

There will also be a dance event, after school, where students can learn a routine and add to their step tally, and a tutor walk where each tutor will have the opportunity to add to the step count.

This also gives students the opportunity to discuss how cancer has impacted their lives in a safe space with staff or their friends.
