A number of businesses across Cumbria have been recognised and praised for their support of the Armed Forces through discount schemes and increased job opportunities.

Armed Forces Day was celebrated in Carlisle city centre on Saturday, June 24, with the event providing an opportunity for members of the public to say thank you to troops from past and present.

Cumbria Chamber, Cumbria Education Trust (William Howard School), Nuclear Waste Services and James Fisher Subtech were all lauded for their support of veterans and reservists but much of the praise was reserved for Wragg Mark-Bell Solicitors.

The Carlisle law firm already held a bronze award from the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme but this year took their efforts 'to the next level' and were awarded silver status as a result, after demonstrating a forces-friendly approach to business and a commitment to veterans and reservists.

Nick Kennon, managing director at Wragg Mark-Bell said: "Our pledges under the Armed Forces Covenant include guaranteed interviews for spouses and partners of service people if they meet the job criteria, and flexible paid leave to help families of servicemen and women and reservists deal with deployments or training.

"As a reservist myself, I’m aware just how much businesses can benefit by employing former service personnel or reservists – they come with first-class training and many transferable skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, leadership and a positive can-do approach."

Businesses that sign the Armed Forces covenant promise to support reserves, veterans, service personnel, and their families through available opportunities.

Mr Kennon added: "I’d encourage businesses to consider taking part in the ERS (Defence Employer Recognition Scheme) as they can provide vital support to veterans, members of the armed forces and their families, and it’s an opportunity to give something back in return for the invaluable and courageous service they give to society."
