CARLISLE recorded its hottest day of 2023 this week, according to an online study.

With the UK experiencing something of a heatwave this month, it was perhaps no surprise when the temperature in Carlisle rocketed to 28.69°C on Monday, June 12.

That’s according to the popular website hottestdayoftheyear.co.uk - which documents the recorded temperatures across the entirety of the United Kingdom.

2022 was the UK’s warmest year on record as per the Met Office, with the average temperature above 10°C for the first time in history.

However, they have suggested that 2023 is expected to surpass those numbers amid growing concerns about the threat of human-induced climate change.

After it was revealed that each country in the UK had recorded a record-breaking annual mean temperature in 2022, the head of the Met Office national climate information centre, Dr Mark McCarthy, spoke about climate change’s impact on the weather.

He said: “Although an arbitrary number, the UK surpassing an annual average temperature of 10°C is a notable moment in our climatological history.

"This moment comes as no surprise, since 1884 all the 10 years recording the highest annual temperature have occurred from 2003.

“It is clear from the observational record that human-induced global warming is already impacting the UK’s climate.”

The current forecast predicts that temperatures in Cumbria will remain well above 20°C for the next week, although it remains to be seen whether Monday’s record-breaking numbers will be matched.
