Cumberland Council is inviting residents and businesses to have their say on the proposed development plans for Devonshire Street and English Street in Carlisle.

The schemes, funded by the UK Government’s Future High Street Fund and Town Deal Fund, aim to improve the space for the local community and businesses on Devonshire Street and English Street.

Consultation gets underway next Tuesday, June 6, and carries on until Saturday, July 1. The proposed plans include more outdoor seating, street furniture, benches, cycle parking, trees, and plants.

The projects aim to create a meaningful activity zone, with more spaces for people to walk and spend time sitting outdoors.

Devonshire Street and English Street will continue to provide vehicle access.

With nearby regeneration projects at Carlisle Station and the University of Cumbria’s new Citadels Campus, more than £80 million of public funding is being invested in Carlisle City Centre.

The project team has organised drop-in sessions which will be Tuesday, June 6 between 1 pm and 7 pm at Le Gall, Devonshire Street, Carlisle.

For residents and visitors of the area, there is the following event: Saturday, June 10 10 am to 3 pm, gazebo, Market Square, Carlisle (during the Hawker Festival in Carlisle).

This will give everyone the opportunity to look at the designs for the area, provide feedback directly to the project team and ask questions about the proposal too.

Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, executive member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said: “The proposals for Devonshire Street and English Street will enhance the area and make it more vibrant and welcoming, and the informal consultations will give the public, residents and businesses the opportunity to share their thoughts about the proposed developments.

“We hope that people will come and let us know what they think, and if they come to the consultation event on Saturday 10 June, they will be able to join in with the fantastic Hawker Festival which will be taking place in Carlisle.”
