A SMALL family-run business in Keswick has turned half of their shop into a new dog-friendly gin bar.

Bert and Ernie's bar which operates within Gifts by the Lake, in Packhorse Court, is run by Joanne Clarke, her partner Ed Riley and her 18-year-old son Dominic.

"It's been amazing so far, especially over the bank holiday. We've had people doing a working lunch sat in the window and said it's very relaxing as well as big groups of people in," Jo said.

The business takes its name from the family's beloved King Charles Cavalier dogs, who whilst they are only pups at the moment, they are sure to be a regular punter within the bar.

Dominic, who often gladly takes the mantle behind the bar, has just left school and did his apprenticeship with the family in level 3 retail management.

Jo, who was a driving instructor in Salford before moving to the Eden Valley, opened the gift shop back in May 2021.

Her partner Ed brings 20 years of hotel experience to the business.

"We have another lady Helen who does a couple of days a week with us, historically she did the market in Keswick for a long time but came on board last year and she's been amazing ever since.

"She is an absolute star with the customers and pivotal role in the success of the shop and we class her as part of our little family," Jo said.

The bar, which is also child-friendly and offers both outdoor and indoor seating, is open from 10am until 8pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 6pm over the weekend, with hopes of extending their hours in the future.

"We also serve all local products.

"So gins, vodkas, whiskys, soft drinks, craft beers and lagers, and are introducing crisp type snacks.

"Also we're currently offering 10 per cent off any drinks and also double up on any spirit for an extra £2.

"Our aim was to make it a relaxing space, homely like where people could relax and the feedback has been amazing.

"We've been told that the way we chat to people has played a huge part in its success already," Jo said.
