Vandals attacked part of a community wood created in Cockermouth to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Thirty of the 1,212 newly-planted trees in Harris Park Extension, off Dale View, were targeted.

Stakes were broken but none of the actual trees, planted by Cockermouth Town Council in late 2021, were damaged.

"It looks like someone has run around and knocked over a whole bunch of stakes which guarded the trees," said Cllr Richard Watson.

"Cllr Helen Tucker and I cleared up the broken stakes and tubes, the trees fortunately were intact.

"We tidied them up and put shorter tubes on some and left others that were doing well."

Cllr Watson appealed to anyone seeing trees being damaged to notify the police.

The council received a grant from Untied Utilities, which covered the cost of planting the trees. Following advice from Cumbria Woodlands, a mixture of aspen, alder, birch, maple, hazel and oak were planted.
