A WORKINGTON couple who first caught each other's eye whilst crossing over Navvies Bridge as teenagers are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.
Pauline and Gordon Hamilton, both 81, have lived at their home in Barepot, Workington for 56 years, sharing a love of dogs, their family and country western music in what has been an 'incredibly happy' 60 years of married life together.
The couple will be celebrating their special anniversary with a party in Workington cricket club, with a whole host of family and friend including their three daughters, Karen Hamilton, Julie Wilson and Lynne Thompson, who will be traveling from her home in Canada to celebrate the special day.
They also have two granddaughters and two grandsons, as well as a much-loved springer spaniel, Mabel.
The pair first saw each other whilst crossing Navvies Bridge in Workington as teenagers. Paul said 'I really fancy her' to a friend... who went to set the pair up.
Pauline and Gordon then went on their first date to a spot which saw many budding romances - the former Princess Hall in Workington - and the rest, as they say, was history.
Gordon worked on the water board until he was 75, with Pauline doing a number of jobs before spending the last ten years of her working life at Lilliput Lane.
Talking about her mam and dad’s marriage, daughter Karen Hamilton said: “They’re absolutely amazing, my dad dotes on my mam.
“They’re just really nice people, they’re well thought of. I’m really proud of them. I just hope I turn out like them.”
The couple have many hobbies, such as fell walking, holidaying in the UK and a shared love of country western music.
Times haven’t always been easy; the couple were flooded out by the devasting floods of 2009, having to wade their way out of the property. They were the first couple in Barepot allowed back in their home following the terrible aftermath.
Gordon said: “We’ve had our ups and downs, but we have three lovely daughters and have had a very happy life.”
When asked what the secret is to such a long and happy marriage, Gordon said: “Patience with each other and get on with it, it’s something they don’t seem to get nowadays.
“We’ve been part of each other’s lives for so long, we're just the biggest part of each other’s lives."
Talking about marriage, Gordon said: “It’s like your car... you take it to the garage and get it fixed - you don’t just automatically change it!”
