Veteran Cumbrian goalkeeper Scott Carson has signed a new contract with Premier League champions Manchester City.

The 37-year-old from Cleator Moor has extended his contract to keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2004.

It prolongs Carson's spell in the City ranks, having been there permanently since 2021 and on loan previously.

The Cumbrian has made just two first-team appearances in that time but his role behind the scenes has often been praised by Pep Guardiola.

Former England international Carson, speaking to City's website, said: "I’m excited to be staying at City for the 2023/24 season.

“I love working with Pep, [goalkeeping coach] Xabi Mancisidor and our incredible players every day. Hopefully I can help all of our goalkeepers be at their best.”

City's director of football Txiki Begiristain added: “Scott is a real asset to our squad and enjoys a close working relationship with the goalkeepers and coaches.

“We’re very happy he has signed a contract extension. I look forward to seeing him support his team-mates and train well to ensure he is ready to perform on the pitch when called upon.”

Former Aston Villa, West Brom, Leeds United, Liverpool and Derby County keeper Carson made his City debut in May 2021 when he was drafted in for their 4-3 Premier League victory over Newcastle United.

He also got a substitute outing in the Champions League last season when City faced Sporting Lisbon.

Guardiola last year described the west Cumbrian as an invaluable presence around the squad, saying: "The best advice I could give to the young players is to stay around Scott Carson as much as possible in the locker room and on the pitch.

“It would be better than being with me. If they spend a lot of time [with him], listen to him and pay attention, that is the best advice and learning they can get about their future careers.

“Every second he is training and every minute you get on the pitch and in the changing room [with Carson], you value.

“It’s like the young actors have to be with the old actors on the set. They are wiser and have the values of the profession.”

Carson is one of two Cumbrian goalkeepers on Man City's books, along with 20-year-old England Under-21 international James Trafford, from Greysouthen.
