POLICE officers who tried to save the life of a murder victim who was stabbed in Carlisle City Centre have been commended for their bravery and compassion.

Ryan Kirkpatrick, 24, was repeatedly stabbed by a masked attacker in front of horrified crowds at a bar in Carlyle Court on 18 September 2021.

PC Luke Russell, PC Dan Proud and PC Anthony Cropley were the first police responders on the scene.

The officers found the victim heavily bleeding after being stabbed multiple times and immediately began to perform CPR whilst working jointly to in an effort to resuscitate the injured man.

Upon arrival of paramedics, the officers were able to handover care before turning their own priority to securing the scene and identifying potential witnesses amongst the members of the public remaining on scene.

Sadly Ryan Kirkpatrick died of his injuries. 

The officers involved in this horrific and tragic incident were commended for the professional and sensitive way they were able to carry out their actions at the scene.

Inspector Rachel Carruthers said: "All three officers worked with great tenacity, in difficult circumstances, whilst displaying sensitivity towards the victim's family and friends.

"The officers should be extremely proud of their actions that evening. Whilst the outcome was tragic, their efforts to preserve life and protect the wider public was exceptional and they are a credit to the Constabulary."

Meanwhile detectives, officers and prosecutors involved in the successful conviction of Kane Hull and Liam Porter have also been commended for a first-rate investigation. 

Kane Hull, 29, and Liam Porter, 33, were found guilty of the murder of Ryan Kirkpatrick at Carlisle Crown Court.

They were both jailed for life, with Hull sentenced to at least 28 years and Porter at least 26 years.

The investigation also led to convictions for Olivia Memmory, 23, Ross Neville, 32, and Michael Celmins, 32 who had assisted the pair to evade arrest and travel outside of the UK.

The Police awards ceremony heard that the investigation was complicated by the fact that Hull and Porter had fled the country to Ireland in the aftermath of the attack and officers had to overcome a variety of obstacles in tracing the men and then having them extradited back.

The team which worked on the investigation were commended for their dedication and sacrifice.

Those recognised included detectives, constables, family liaison specialists, counsel, and others.

Chief Superintendent Mick Bird, said: "This was a harrowing and upsetting case which impacted the whole city of Carlisle. It was imperative that those responsible for carrying out the murder, or those who assisted them escape, were tracked down and held accountable for their actions.

"Those involved - including but not limited to those commended this week - all played a vital role in ensuring justice was carried out for the family of Mr Kirkpatrick.

"I would like to praise everyone involved for their commitment during this challenging investigation and their thoroughness and professionalism throughout."
