TWO fighters training out of a gym in Carlisle walked away with two emphatic wins at the weekend.
Matty McLeish and Matthew Wrightson, who train at Dragon’s Gym Carlisle, both their won their fights outside of Carlisle, with one crossing to the other side of the world to compete.
Matthew Wrightson is currently living and training at Bang Tao gym in Phuket, Thailand, where he has been ‘following his dream’ of training the home of Thai Kickboxing.
The fighter moved back out to Thailand for his second stint a month ago, where he was offered to fight for the Bang Tao stadium title against an Australian opponent.
Matthew continued his winning streak, 'knocking the Australian out with a solid right hand' in the second round to become stadium champion.
Slightly closer to home, Matty, aged 17, took to Kilmarnock, Scotland, where he added to his undefeated streak of ten fights and ten wins.
“At only 17 years of age, Matty is fighting against grown men and certainly holding his own.
“Matty dominated the first three rounds of the fight, landing some solid kicks and knees, eventually stopping his opponent with a barrage of knees and punches,” his coach Christian Percival said.
“As a coach, it’s great when your fighters start getting noticed on the circuit and we received some nice words about Matty from other gyms and coaches.
“We are all so proud of these lads who are a credit to the gym and are a great example to the rest of the up-and-coming fighters we have at the gym,” he added.
